Sudan Rumé: The Pilgirm’s Return
Once upon a time Egypt and Sudan existed as one land, shared soil, shared spirit and somewhere deep in the lush highlands of Boma, South Sudan, a coffee tree quietly flourished, unseen and untouched, but deeply rooted, waiting for the world to rediscover its light.
It was in 1940 that Sudan Rumé, this rare varietal, revealed itself once again to curious hands. Its rediscovery marks the start of its extraordinary pilgrimage.
Traditionally, pilgrims ventured into the unknown, traversing deserts, mountains, and endless horizons to fulfill a religious duty, to enrich their souls, refine their understanding, purify their hearts and transform through the journey itself. Every step held knowledge, wisdom, and trials that polished them, shaped them, and deepened their humanity.
Sudan Rume’s own pilgrimage mirrored this. From its humble origins in the rugged Sudanese highlands, it traveled far beyond familiar lands, braving turbulent weather, unfamiliar soils, and challenging climates. It survived and thrived, eventually settling in the care of Café Granja La Esperanza in Colombia. Under the care of Juan and his family, this coffee was refined, developed, and nurtured to reach its fullest, richest potential.
In 2021, in the search for coffee, for meaning and identity. We journeyed to Colombia initially to fulfill a business necessity, but returned transformed, carrying a deeper understanding.
To truly know something, you must first touch its roots.
Just like the pilgrim’s return—العَود أحمَد—marked by honor, wisdom, and reverence, Sudan Rume returns now, homeward bound, to Cairo. Its journey is complete.

Slow down, ask, and listen, let the coffee dance in your cup and let your intuition lead you back to where you belong.
